Editorial penned by Jerry Donnellan in November of 1996 as New York Vets faced some backlash when we were opening Rockland's first homeless veterans' shelter (MIA - Missing In America).

(Homeless) Veterans Day
Wrapped in a rubbery poncho, thrown on the muddy floor of a dust-off like a bag of mail, the kind of mail we forever awaited, I was the second WIA (wounded in action) tossed onto that chopper. The impact re-opened hundreds of wounds; the medic’s morphine did little to numb the burning, for that’s the real pain of a grenade. The Huey chopper was a sea of noise, holding open new and old wounds.

Machine guns roared out of each open door, firing up the tree line. With a mouth full of blood and broken teeth, I tried to call to the gunner to check on my buddy who had stopped moving. He couldn’t hear or was too involved with his target. From my blind side the crew chief said, in a matter of fact kind of way, “The other guy’s dead, KIA!” (Killed in action.)

The pain no longer seemed to matter. In fact, it was a comfort for it told me I was still alive. The ride to the 95th Evac seemed long, strange and somewhat spiritual, propped up against Jesse’s body. We had things in common. I talked to him about our platoon, that we were kids, 19 on average. For us, things took on a strange, almost playful atmosphere, like some sporting event in a perverse boys’ boarding school, and about how we hated those smokey, Asian twilights. There are no beautiful sunsets in combat; the fall of the sun only warns of the coming of night and the night was Charlie’s.

Yet there were times of joy and exhilaration — coming through a firefight alive, contrasted by the crashing guilt of watching a friend turn into a red mist. You are at once repulsed by it, and then drawn into it, battle.

Now the war belonged to someone else. It was our war no more. We headed into DaNang going home. For Jesse and I the war was over. We would never hear the catcalls from the war protesters. Jesse’s ears were cold and mine were tucked away safely in a quiet hospital. They talked of the poor kid who had lost a leg, and even the most militant anti-war demonstrator would fall silent in my presence….anti-war….as if anyone was pro-war…

Anyone who hasn’t seen combat can’t understand or imagine the contradictions, the nuances. Those who have, are spiritually captured by it. Jesse and I have gone on talking — sometimes it’s his voice that comes out of my pen; hence, he is my inspiring guilt.

Yet there’s another veteran who came home from the war, whose breath hasn’t stopped, nor was his flesh torn, but he was wounded all the same….a psychic bullet found its mark. When he came home he was met with a thousand unfair questions for which there were no answers. We hadn’t lost the war in Vietnam; we had lost that war in Washington. Nonetheless he took the heat, scuffling through his life, perhaps a marriage or two, a dozen or two jobs and now in his 4th or 5th decade, the coming of frost cuts hard on his joints. He can no longer hire on at a construction site, the doors of America are closing on him.

We have the resources and ability to provide for our homeless veterans. Please don’t let the community of the '90s do what our country of the ‘60s did, and turn its back on him.

For him it was a long way to Saigon, but an even longer way back. He is MIA (missing in America). Only we can bring him all the way home.

On Wednesday, November 10, at 11:15 a.m. there will be a ceremony at Spring Valley High School in which we will be bringing “home” SSG Boorman’s Purple Heart.

The Purple Heart will be mounted inside the High School for all to see what sacrifices a student of theirs (class of 1940) gave his life for so they can have the freedoms they have today.

Stanley H. Boorman is a 1940 graduate of Spring Valley High School. He was killed in action as mentioned below. His Purple Heart Medal was found in a street fair and returned to Purple Hearts Reunited. The Purple Heart is now mounted on a plaque and our organization wanted to return it to the family. There are no living relatives left and as the current Commander of Chapter 120, Military Order of the Purple Heart and a graduate of Spring Valley High, class of 65, we thought the honorable thing to do was have this Purple Heart returned to the last place he is known to have his roots, Spring Valley High School. We are seeking to put this plaque with his Purple Heart and short information about Mr. Boorman in a showcase at Spring Valley High School.
